Hurricane Isaias roof damage and insurance claims in Destin, Florida (2026)

Updated October 20, 2026

By Benji Licht, Florida public adjuster, FL Lic. #W523574

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida at about 8:30 pm on October 9, 2026, a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds. Wind damage to a Destin roof goes to your homeowners insurer, and you have until October 9, 2027 to report it.

Key takeaways

  • Wind damage to a Destin roof is a homeowners claim, and the share of the roof the wind ruined decides repair or replacement.

  • Surge topped 3.5 feet above normal high tide at East Pass and neared 4 feet at Old Pass Lagoon.

  • Deadlines: report a new claim by October 9, 2027 and a supplemental one by April 9, 2028.

  • Condo owners have two policies in play: the association's master policy and their own unit policy.

Will my insurer pay for a new roof?

The insurer pays to repair what hurricane wind damaged. A few lifted shingles usually mean a repair, and a roof with whole sections gone is where a replacement comes in.

Rain that got in through the opening the wind made goes on the same claim. Photograph the opening first, then each room below it.

Call before the roofer tears anything off, and we will go over what to photograph first.

Wind or storm surge on the Destin coast

"Water rising from outside, including storm surge, usually needs separate flood insurance," says Benji Licht, the licensed public adjuster who heads Base Claims.

The National Weather Service measured surge of more than 3.5 feet above normal high tide at East Pass, and nearly 4 feet at Old Pass Lagoon. Rain reached 11.65 inches near Mary Esther, and about 53% of Okaloosa County customers lost power at the peak.

Before any drywall comes out, photograph the water line on the walls.

I own a condo in Destin. Whose policy pays?

Start with your association's declaration and its master policy; they decide where the building ends and your unit begins. The master policy usually covers the structure and common areas, and your unit policy covers the inside of the unit and your belongings.

Get the association's claim number, then read your unit policy next to the master policy.

Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island

Gale-force winds bent stop signs in Fort Walton Beach and thrashed the trees on Okaloosa Island, the Associated Press reported. Okaloosa County also asked residents to report damage through its own damage survey, and that report is separate from a claim with your insurer.

When is a Destin claim due?

October 9, 2027 is one year from landfall and the last day to report a new claim (s. 627.70132). Damage found later, or repairs that cost more, can go in a supplemental claim until April 9, 2028.

For questions about your policy or your rights, the Florida Department of Financial Services helpline is 1-877-693-5236.
